Botswana Visa Requirements

Most safari visitors need no visa for Botswana at all. Citizens of over a hundred countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the EU and most of southern Africa, enter for tourism stays of up to 90 days within any twelve-month period. Everyone else applies in advance through the official e-visa portal, since visas on arrival are not issued to most nationalities. Botswana is a landlocked southern African country whose immigration rules are enforced strictly at both airports and land borders.

Visa Free Entry to Botswana for Safari Travellers

The exempt list runs to more than a hundred jurisdictions and covers nearly everyone who books a Botswana safari from abroad. North America, the UK, Ireland, all of the EU, Australia and New Zealand are on it, alongside Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The allowance is 90 days total within a rolling twelve-month window rather than 90 days per visit. That distinction catches out people who come in and out of the region on a longer trip. Immigration officers record the permitted stay on your entry stamp, and the number they write may be shorter than 90 days at their discretion.

Nothing needs applying for and nothing needs paying. You arrive, you present a passport, you get stamped. The lists do change from time to time, so check your own nationality against current guidance rather than assuming.

Passport Requirements for a Botswana Safari

Three things, and Botswana enforces the first one without flexibility.

Your passport must have at least six months of validity remaining. Travellers have been refused entry over this, so count the months rather than glancing at the year. You also need at least two blank pages for stamps, which matters more than it sounds if you are combining Botswana with Zimbabwe, Zambia or Namibia on the same trip, since each crossing takes space.

Anyone travelling on a temporary or emergency passport needs a visa regardless of nationality, including citizens of otherwise exempt countries. If you lost a passport shortly before departure and are travelling on a replacement document, treat that as a visa requirement and sort it before you fly.

Namibian citizens are the one exception to the six-month passport rule. Everyone else, including SADC nationals crossing by road for a few days, needs the full six months of validity on the document.

Applying for a Botswana e-Visa Before Your Safari

Travellers from countries outside the exempt list apply online through Botswana’s official e-visa platform at evisa.gov.bw, or in person at a Botswana embassy or high commission. Applications through the portal are the faster route.

You will need a clear scan of your passport biodata page showing at least six months of validity, recent colour passport photographs, a covering letter setting out why you are visiting, your trip itinerary, proof of accommodation, evidence of sufficient funds and a return or onward ticket. A re-entry permit for your country of residence is required where that country demands one.

Processing commonly takes seven to fourteen working days, so apply well before you book anything non-refundable. On approval you receive the visa by email. Print it. Several Botswana border posts cannot verify a visa held on a phone screen, and arriving with no paper copy at a remote crossing is a problem you do not want at the end of a long drive.

Visa Types and Validity for Botswana Tours

Tourist and visitor visas cover safaris, holidays and visits to family or friends, and are the categories almost every traveller needs. Single entry permits one crossing, after which the visa is spent. Multiple entry allows repeated crossings within its validity, which matters if your itinerary loops through Victoria Falls or Namibia and returns.

Transit visas cover travellers passing through to somewhere else and are usually valid for around seven days. Business, study, employment and investor categories exist separately and are not appropriate for a safari trip even if the dates suit.

Every traveller needs their own approved visa, including infants. There is no family application and no dependent listing on a parent’s document.

Entry Requirements for Minors on a Family Safari

Botswana applies documentation rules for children that are stricter than most first-time visitors expect, and they apply at every point of entry regardless of nationality or visa status.

Every minor under 18 must present a certified copy of an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents’ details. A standard short-form certificate is not enough, and obtaining an unabridged version can take weeks in some countries, so start early on a family safari booking.

Where only one parent is travelling, the absent parent must supply an affidavit consenting to the travel. Where neither parent travels, the accompanying adult needs documented temporary guardianship alongside consent from both parents. The one exemption is where the father’s name does not appear on the birth certificate, in which case no affidavit is required.

These documents get checked. Turning up at Kazungula with a child and no unabridged certificate ends the trip at the counter.

The unabridged birth certificate requirement is the single most common reason families are refused entry to Botswana. Order it the day you book, not the week you fly.

Land Border Visa Rules for Overland Safaris

Botswana shares land borders with South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, and plenty of safari itineraries cross at least one of them, particularly the Kazungula crossing near Kasane for Victoria Falls.

Visa-exempt nationalities are stamped at land borders exactly as at airports. Nationalities that require a visa should not count on obtaining one at the border, since Botswana does not issue visas on arrival to most passport holders, and being turned away at a remote post with no alternative crossing nearby is a genuine risk.

Border posts keep set operating hours and smaller ones close earlier than the main crossings. Some run cash only when the network drops, so carry Pula. Allow far more time than the distance suggests, since queues at Kazungula in peak season can run to hours.

Extending Your Stay Beyond a 90 Day Safari

Extensions are applied for at any immigration office inside Botswana, before your current permission expires rather than after. Bring your passport, evidence of funds and a clear reason for staying longer.

No visitor may remain more than 90 days in any twelve-month period on tourist terms without special permission, which comes as a waiver pending a residence permit application. Overstaying carries penalties and creates problems on future entries, and it is not something to gamble on because a charter flight got rescheduled.

Health Documents Required at Botswana Entry

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required only if you are arriving from, or have transited through an airport in, a country where yellow fever is present. Travellers coming directly from Europe, North America, Australia or most of southern Africa do not need one. The rule applies from one year of age.

No other vaccination is compulsory for entry. Malaria prophylaxis is a medical decision rather than an immigration one, though the northern safari districts including the Okavango Delta, Chobe and Ngamiland carry real risk and warrant a travel clinic conversation six to eight weeks ahead.

Arrival Formalities and the Tourism Development Levy

All international visitors pay a Tourism Development Levy on arrival, collected at airports and land borders, and it applies whether or not you needed a visa. Payment is taken at the port of entry, so have a card and some cash available since terminals are not always working.

Beyond that, arrival is straightforward. You present your passport, receive a stamp recording the days granted, clear customs and continue. Maun and Kasane are small airports and the process is quick. Kazungula and Tlokweng by road take longer.

Visa exempt nationalities. No application, no fee, no advance paperwork. Passport with six months validity and two blank pages, plus unabridged birth certificates for any minors. Stamped on arrival for up to 90 days.

Visa required nationalities. Apply through evisa.gov.bw or a Botswana mission, allowing seven to fourteen working days. Passport scan, photographs, itinerary, accommodation proof, funds and return ticket. Print the approval and carry it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botswana Visa Requirements

How much does a Botswana visa cost?

For most safari visitors the answer is nothing, since over a hundred nationalities enter visa-free for 90 days. Where a visa is needed, a single-entry tourist visa commonly runs around 30 US dollars, with a longer multiple-entry option at roughly 50 dollars, though fees vary by nationality, entry type and processing speed. Separately, every international visitor pays a Tourism Development Levy of 30 US dollars on arrival regardless of visa status. Commercial application sites charge service fees on top of government fees, so use the official portal where you can.

Do I need a visa for Botswana as a US, UK or EU citizen?

No. American, British, Irish, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and all EU passport holders enter without a visa for tourism stays of up to 90 days within any twelve-month period. You need a passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages, and nothing else. The permitted stay is written onto your entry stamp by the immigration officer and can legitimately be less than 90 days.

Can I get a Botswana visa on arrival?

Usually no, and this is the assumption that causes the most trouble. Botswana does not issue visas on arrival to most nationalities that require one. Some border posts have historically issued entry visas to selected countries valid for 30 to 90 days, though relying on that is unwise, particularly at a land crossing where the nearest alternative may be hundreds of kilometres away. Apply through the e-visa portal in advance and print the approval.

What documents do children need to enter Botswana?

A certified copy of an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents, presented at every point of entry for anyone under 18. Where one parent is absent, that parent must provide an affidavit consenting to the travel. Where both parents are absent, the accompanying adult needs documented temporary guardianship plus consent from both. No affidavit is needed if the father’s name does not appear on the certificate. Every child also needs their own visa where one is required, including infants.

How long can I stay in Botswana on a tourist visa?

Up to 90 days total within any rolling twelve-month period, not 90 days per entry. Leaving and returning does not reset the clock. Extensions can be applied for at any immigration office inside the country before your current permission lapses, and staying beyond 90 days in a year requires a waiver pending a residence permit application. Overstaying carries penalties and complicates future entries.

How long does a Botswana e-visa take to process?

Commonly seven to fourteen working days through the official portal, though it varies with nationality and application volume. Apply well ahead of booking non-refundable flights or camps. Approval arrives by email and must be printed, since several border posts cannot verify a visa displayed on a phone. If your application is refused, the reason is given and you can reapply with corrected documents rather than being permanently barred.
